Don't Trash Wareham to hold second major cleanup in April
Following last year’s success, Don’t Trash Wareham will be back for another crosstown cleanup in late April.
The anti-trash organization run by several residents will join communities around Massachusetts in a Keep America Beautiful initiative, called the ‘Great Massachusetts Cleanup’, on April 23 and 24.
The cleanup involves residents cleaning up not only the areas around their own homes, but also in areas like public beaches, parks, playgrounds, and businesses.
Last May, about 300 volunteers, including town organizations like the Wareham Land Trust, the Wareham Historical Society, and the Onset Beautification Committee, as well as several school groups, picked up litter throughout Wareham and Onset.
Nora Bicki, one of the group organizers, said last year several businesses in the area donated trash bags, gloves, and water for the workers.
Bicki said that the cleanup effort was just the first step in keeping Wareham litter-free.
“It’s about cleaning up the town, and then preventing [more] litter,” she said.
The organization continued its efforts with another cleanup in September of last year, and will implement education programs this year, with the help of a Cape Cod Five grant. The grant is for $1,850, money Don’t Trash Wareham will put towards its elementary education component.
