Making big splashes to help the community: YMCA's Swim-a-thon raises $14,000
A Swim-a-thon on Saturday afternoon at the Gleason Family YMCA raised more than $14,000 towards the Y's annual fundraising campaign with contributions still coming in.
There were 34 swimmers altogether, including two ten-mile challenge swimmers (Dan Livingstone and Pam Friedman), that contributed to a total of 61.16 miles swum.
Both challenge swimmers completed 360 laps each, and Friedman raised the most money of all the swimmers: $4,031.
The youngest swimmer was sixteen years old, and the oldest in his mid-sixties.
"We've got people from all over that come to this that just wanna give to a good cause," said Dyer. "All the money goes to the YMCA financial aid program so that no one ever gets denied access to the Y or its programs due to a financial inability to pay for it themselves."
The Y hosts numerous fundraising events throughout the year to help individuals and families that are unable to pay the full membership fee. The Swim-a-thon is one of the biggest ones.
"It's close to everybody's heart," said Dyer. "We want to make sure our community is supported. "
Swimmers were required to raise a minimum of $50 per hour they plan to swim through pledges.
The target this year was $16,000; last year the Swim-a-thon raked in $15,000.
