Wareham man charged with manslaughter arrested

Apr 26, 2016

This weekend, police arrested a witness who failed to appear and testify at a trial related to a 2014 fatal stabbing at the Cumberland Farms on Main Street, a spokeswoman for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office announced Tuesday.

Jared Frye, 21, was arraigned on April 26 in Brockton Superior Court on one count of manslaughter for the stabbing, said District Attorney spokeswoman Beth Stone.

The stabbing occurred on Oct. 8, 2014 and resulted in the death of 23-year-old Dwayne Borges of Brockton.

Frye had previously testified before a grand jury, but did not appear as a witness for the second trial. Following his failure to appear, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz indicted Frye on the manslaughter charge and issued a warrant for his arrest on April 22.

On Oct. 8, 2014, Frye was one of four individuals involved in a fist fight at the Main Street Cumberland Farms convenience store in Wareham with the victim. During the fight, Demetrius Goshen, 19, of Wareham pulled out a knife and stabbed Borges eight times. Borges was taken to Tobey Hospital and then medflighted to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

On March 17, after a five-day trial, a jury deliberated eight hours before finding Goshen guilty of voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to serve 18-20 years in state prison. Two other defendants in the case, Adrian Garcia, 22, and Latroy Hairston, 20, testified before the grand jury, and at trial, that they witnessed Goshen stab Borges. Frye, who also testified before the grand jury, did not appear when he was scheduled to testify during the trial.

Garcia and Hairston pleaded guilty to an assault and battery charge and were sentenced to a term of probation for five years.
