In Tuesday’s Onset Water District election, voters awarded newcomer Kenneth Fontes a three-year term on the Water Board of Commissioners over incumbent Brian O’Hearne.

The election had three seats up for grabs on the board with two contested races. Fontes, who is the director of the Wareham Boys and Girls Club, received 90 votes to O’Hearne’s 52 votes. O’Hearne, a controller for the CTS Corporation, sought a fifth term on the board.

In the other contested race, Benjamin Hughes netted 78 votes to fellow candidate Michael Sanborn’s 66. Hughes moved to town recently and works as a wastewater engineer. He was elected to a one-year term.

Sanborn had previously been a board member and spent 30 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Onset Fire Department.

Francis Kowzic ran unopposed for his seat on the board, earning 122 votes for a two-year term.

In an uncontested race for one seat on the Prudential Committee, incumbent Marcine Fernandes earned 121 votes for another three-year term.

Incumbent Moderator Robert Brousseau was sent back to his post with 121 votes in an uncontested race.

Clerk-Treasurer Mary McCoy reported that 151 people voted during the four hour election, held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Onset VFW.
