William F. McDermott III, 68, of Mashpee, formerly of Buzzards Bay, passed away suddenly at his home June 4. He was loving husband of 40 years to Nancy (Richardson) McDermott of Mashpee. He was born April 6, 1948 in Dorchester, the son of the late William F. and Eleanor (DeAngelis) McDermott Jr. A 1966 graduate of Bourne High School, William later studied at Newbury College in Brookline.

Although, he built a home and raised a family in Mashpee since 1976, he has never forgotten his hometown of Bourne. He was a member of the Bourne Lions Club for many years. He is a lifetime member of the Wareham New Bedford Elks, where he made many lasting friendships. Bill was passionate about the outdoors and cultivating the beauty around him. He loved gardening and keeping his home and yard exquisite. He was a groundskeeper for Willowbend Country Club until his early retirement in 2004. Bill was a dedicated husband, father, brother and friend throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones, especially his family.

He is survived by his daughter Jennifer and her husband, Leslie Westgate III of Buzzards Bay. He was the grandfather of Jack, Michaela and Ainsley. He was the brother of Dominic Bernabei and his wife Eleanor of Portland, Maine and Maryann Barnes of Layton, Utah. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and close friends. He was the brother of the late Frances Degan.

A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, June 11 at the Wareham New Bedford Elks, 2855 Cranberry Highway, East Wareham, MA 02538 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The family asks in lieu of flowers please make a scholarship donation in William’s name to; Wareham New Bedford Elks, P.O.
