Post 220 captures district championship for first time

The Wareham Post 220 American Legion baseball team are District 10 champions for the first time following a 5-3 over Sandwich Post 188 on Wednesday.

Wareham’s record for the season so far is 19-6-1, and the team headed to Norwood on July 23 for the Final Eight Championship Tournament.

Head Coach Keith Delgado, who has coached the Wareham team for 11 years, said the championship in on July 20 was well deserved.

“This is an experienced team that plays with confidence, plays the game tough with emotion and you put all those together and that’s a recipe for success,” said Delgado.

The team won the district tournament with five straight wins over six days.

The final game had the team down 2-0 in the sixth when Wareham’s offense came alive. Daniel Renwick, Kyle Brezinski and Sam Bacchiocchi all had hits that gave the team its first lead.

Delgado said he scouted the team’s local competitors, but facing last year's state champions, Pittsfield, with little knowledge of that team was a challenge.

“We don’t know what they look like aside from the scores of the past few games,” said Delgado. “I was telling my players we don’t know any of these teams, but we need to focus on what we can do and see where that takes us.”

On July 23, Post 220 team lost to Pittsfield 11-8 in the first round of the tournament.

Post 220 players are between 16 and 19 years old who “have aspirations of possibly playing at the next level,” said Delgado, either at the college or perhaps Major League level.
