School officials will seek new vehicles, fund transfer at Town Meeting
The Wareham School Department will ask voters at October's Town Meeting to approve purchasing a dump truck, a car for the driver's education program and to transfer funds for the transportation of homeless children.
The School Committee on Wednesday approved administrators' requests to submit the articles for inclusion on the Town Meeting warrant, which serves as the agenda for the meeting.
Regarding the transfer of funds, the article involves moving federally-funded revenue from the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act, which will be used to transport homeless students to and from their temporary housing outside of the district, into the School Transportation Revolving Account. The article asks to transfer the funds to be used when needed, "particularly the purchase of buses when needed and the maintenance of the existing fleet," wrote School Business Manager Michael MacMillan.
Some School Committee members questioned the necessity of buying a new dump truck.
"I still haven't heard why we are replacing [the dump truck]," said Chair Geoff Swett. "What's wrong with the current one?"
"We're replacing it because we desperately need it," said Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood.
The committee will add to the articles information about the conditions of the current vehicles. MacMillan is currently working on getting the best price for the vehicles, which he will have within a week, Shaver-hood said after the meeting.
