Wareham Tigers to face tough schedule

Sep 7, 2016

After playing in the National Championships three years ago, the Wareham Tigers are still the team to beat for many in the Hockomock League.

“We’re in for a tough season,” said Tigers President Richard Hagopian. “But we’re going to play with that competitive spirit and hopefully get to Disney again.”

This year, there are 68 players in the program spread across four teams. Kids ages 7 to 15 years old are eligible.

In 2013, two teams from the Pop Warner-affiliated organization traveled to Disney World in Orlando, Florida and competed nationally. Those teams were the first ones from Wareham to ever make it that far.

On Sept. 3, Tiger teams played the first games of the season against Brockton, but lost.

Hagopian said Brockton is favored to go far come playoff time.

“We opened against a top contender, and we took our lumps, but it showed we could hang with them,” he said.

Other teams from the Boston area will also test the Tigers, he said.

“We’ve got games against heavy hitters, Mount Hope, Mission Hill and Hyde Park,” he said.

This season marks the second year that the Tigers must deal with a reshuffling of the weight classes, said Hagopian, explaining that in addition to Hockomock League teams the players will face competition from teams in the Rhode Island Southern Massachusetts Association, as well.

In addition to the games, Hagopian said there’s a huge focus on academic achievement. If a player isn’t doing well in school, there are consequences on the field, he said.

“We push education, we push academics, we teach them discipline,” he said. “We don’t just talk about the Xs and Os, we talk about what’s going on at home.”

Last year, two players, Jonathan Brightman and Indiana Troupe, earned scholarships as part of Pop Warner’s All American Scholar program. Hagopian noted that Brightman was ranked No. 1 in the country for his academic performance.

“That’s something we’re very proud of,” he said.

The Tigers next games are set for Saturday starting at 9 a.m. in the high school soccer fields. The last regular season game is Oct. 30 followed by league and regional playoff games.
