'Shop With a Cop' treats kids to Walmart shopping spree

The man in the red suit again got some help from Wareham’s boys (and girls) in blue this holiday season.

Wareham Police officers provided back up to 11 children who bought gifts for friends, family and themselves on Wednesday night using $100 gift cards donated by Walmart during “Shop With a Cop.”

Sponsored by the Wareham Police Union and Wareham Police Association for the past six years, the event pairs children in need with police officers for a night of free pizza and then a holiday shopping spree. This year, the kids and cops roamed the aisles of Walmart, at times confounding other shoppers curious about the sudden, increased police presence.

The kids, who are all in elementary school, were chosen to participate by School Resource Officer Karl Baptiste with recommendations by Wareham Public School administrators and teachers.

Police Chief Kevin Walsh said officers look forward to “Shop With a Cop” as much as the kids.

“It’s a great way for them to connect with children in the community and they are all really happy to do it,” said Walsh.

“Shop With a Cop” arrived just a few days after the police department’s annual “Stuff-A-Cruiser” event, which solicited toy donations from shoppers at Walmart and Target on Saturday. During that event, officers collected hundreds of toys that were turned over to the Dick Melloni Youth Foundation for distribution to families in need.

In addition to the 11 officers who participated on Wednesday in “Shop With a Cop,” Walsh extended thanks to Baptiste for organizing the event, Walmart for donating the gift cards and B.B.’s Restaurant for providing food and drinks.
