The Wareham Cultural Council has awarded 11 grants for 2017. The grant money awarded totaled $6,911, which went to various festivals, educational programs, theater events and even artistic healing programs.

Cultural Council Co-Chairman Paul Ciccotelli admitted that one grant recipient, Soule Homestead, was actually in Middleborough. He pointed out that the festivals they were planning to host were attended by a number of Wareham citizens, and so the council felt the grant was justified.

Selectman Alan Slavin thanked the council for its outstanding work. Chair Judith Whiteside agreed, saying, “It’s nice to have work which can be rewarded and which is both helpful and interesting to the townspeople.”

The full list of grant recipients are as follows:

• Cultural Connection, Inc.: $923 for the Free Onset Film Festival, which will be held in summer of 2017.
• John Root: $300 for an “Organic Gardening for Everyone” class, to be held in the spring or summer of 2017 at the Wareham Free Library.
• Onset Bay Association: $922 for the Chalk-Full-O-Fun Street Painting Festival, a relaxed street-chalking occasion for all ages, which will be held in Prospect Park in August of 2017.
• Malcolm Phinney: $922 for historical education programs done by the Wareham Minutemen and Militia, who present an image of Wareham’s population through the 18th and 19th century.
• Buzzards Play Productions: $922 for 2017 theater funding, meant to help defray the cost of producing four to five annual theater productions.
• Jay Michaels: $500 for an early music program at Wareham Middle School, which will highlight vocal and instrumental music from the 13th to the 18th century.
• Piti Theatre Company: $600 for Wareham Bee Week, to stage a production of “To Bee or Not to Bee” at Decas School and the Wareham Free Library.
• SE Massachusetts Pine Barrens Alliance: $400 for “Pine Fest: A Pine Barrens Multicultural Festival”, the fourth annual festival highlighting the cultural diversity and natural beauty of the local pine barrens of southeastern Massachusetts.
• Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts: $300 for “Soaring without Limits,”an artwork course for survivors of brain injuries and their caretakers.
• Soule Homestead Education Center: $200 for the Harvest Festival and Joe Davies Folk Festival, celebrating local history.
• Camp CCC: $922 for Camp CCC, a music camp for children aged 6-14, held at the Onset Campgrounds.
