Organizers of the fourth annual Wareham Oyster Festival received approval and a culinary request from Selectmen on Tuesday night.

“I hope you have more lobster rolls this year then last year,” Selectmen Chair Peter Teitelbaum told Linda Burke and Marie Oliva.

“That’s the plan,” said Oliva, the president and CEO of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce.

Burke and Oliva sought permission for a one-day liquor license and approval to use town roads for the event, which is scheduled for Sunday, May 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held on Main Street in the area of downtown.

Leading up to the festival a series of events are scheduled beforehand. Oyster Festival Week will include a gala fundraiser set for May 25 in the Rosebrook Event Center, a learn to quahog workshop (date to be determined) and an educational event at Lindsey’s Family Restaurant on May 23. On the day of the festival, a 5K road race benefiting the Wareham Boys & Girls Club will be held starting at 10 a.m.

Burke and Oliva noted this year the festival will be held later then usual to take advantage of warmer weather and also to hopefully attract a larger crowd, as summer residents are expected to be in town by then.

Board members thanked Burke and Oliva for helping to put the event together.

“This is a fabulous affair,” said Judith Whiteside, who added that while she’s not a fan of oysters, many of her friends and family members make the trek from other parts of the state for the festival.
