“We Three: Birds, Butterflies and Me” was the topic of hundreds of poems written by Wareham Middle School students and entered in a state-wide contest this spring.

Wareham Middle School’s Taitiana Famania won first place in the seventh grade category. Her poem will be entered in the regional poetry contest, which extends throughout New England, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts also awarded Wareham students Kayla Nayson and Makayla Semaio honorable mentions for their poems.

All 183 participants received a certificate and a thank you letter for participating in the contest.

Though the poems had to stick to the same theme, Diane Cook, the club’s chair for conservation, said she could see students put thought and research into their poems so each had its own twist.

“Some of the kids were really clever the way that they wrote it out,” Cook said. “It was in the form of shape, a butterfly for instance, or a bee.”

One student who entered the contest, Riley Gomes, said the contest inspired her to continue writing poetry on her own.

“I really like writing poetry and it was fun,” said seventh grader Gomes, whose poem was titled “Bees and Butterflies.”

Wareham students being honored throughout the state brings the school recognition, Principal Peter Steedman said, and the school appreciates the opportunity to partner with community organizations like the Wareham Garden Club.

“Sustainability is something the school focuses on with our curriculum and extracurriculars,” Steedman said, adding that the theme of the contest is especially relevant to the school, particularly with its Green Club.

Mary Bruce, the Wareham Garden Club president, attended the state-wide announcement of the contest winners and said she felt pride for the school and town.

“I get really excited when we’re sitting there, because I love Wareham,” Bruce said. “When we’re sitting there, especially when we’re hearing the top awards and I hear Wareham, I’m like, yes!”
