Hundreds test endurance at inaugural The Harvest Triathlon

Jun 10, 2017

A total of 461 people from all over New England swam, biked and ran their way through acres of cranberry country on Saturday in a brand new race, The Harvest Triathlon 2017.

Previously known as Escape the Cape, the race had been held for the past seven years in Onset Village. The event’s host, Max Performance, decided to change the location in response to athlete feedback. One complaint from participants and residents centered on overcrowded roads as cyclists jockeyed with drivers.

Instead of the seaside village setting, participants started and ended the race at the bucolic A.D. Makepeace Co. property on Tihonet Road.

The race featured a 1/3 mile swim, a 10-mile bicycle leg and ended with a 3.1-mile run for the "sprint" triathlon. For a second course option, the Olympic triathlon, the course distances were .93 miles, 24 miles and 6 miles, respectively.

Robert Hurley, a participant from Northborough, said the new course had several advantages over the old course, and it had one drawback.

“With the town setting, there were a lot of bottlenecks on the bike course, it was crowded,” said Hurley, who ran in Escape the Cape two years ago. “Here, the bike course was awesome,” said Hurley.

Regarding the race’s swim leg, Hurley said the warmer water and lack of current made for a better course.

Where the new course didn’t live up to the old one was the running leg.

“There was a lot of gravel, rough terrain. It was beautiful, but running in Onset was great,” he said.

Overall, Hurley, who participates in four to five triathlons a year, said The Harvest Triathlon was a great way to start the racing season.

At the end of The Harvest Triathlon, participants were greeted with an awards ceremony, catered food and a beer garden. Participants had four options to choose from for the race, the sprint triathlon, sprint relay, Olympic triathlon and Olympic relay.

The top three male finishers for the sprint triathlon are as follows:

Robert Hollinger of Amesbury: 58:23.2

Tucker Wetmore of Somerville: 58:37.4

Jay Gump of Conway: 1:02:33.9

The top three female finishers for the sprint triathlon are as follows:

Heather Westerman of Duxbury: 1:08:44.8

Kristin Pitocco of Waltham: 1:09:27.7

Stephanie Doyon of Boston: 1:09:49.3
