A soulful start for Onset Summer of Love concert series

Jun 28, 2017

The Onset Summer of Love – now celebrating its 10th anniversary – had a soulful start Wednesday night with a funk, soul and R&B cover band led by a musician who has shared stages with Chicago and Hootie and the Blowfish.

Held at the Band Shell every Wednesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. until Aug. 30, the shows are free of charge.

The Infractions opened the series on June 28 with Brian Stratton, of Marshfield, on keyboards and lead vocal. Recently, Stratton released a benefit album, “Pay it Forward,” with proceeds going to benefit ALS research. For the album, Stratton rounded up some former bandmates, including Chicago’s Peter Cetera and Darius Rucker of Hootie and Blowfish.

Kat Jones, who organizes the series for the Onset Bay Association, said The Infractions were appearing in the series for the first time this year. She noted the series, which costs roughly $10,000 annually, relies on donations. Concert goers can donate or purchase a T-shirt, water or poster at the show to help fund the series.

Each year, Jones said she tries to book a mix of returning acts that were popular with audiences in past years and new ones to keep the series fresh. New acts this year include: Movin’ On, a Bad Company tribute and Way Up South, a “feel good rock band, ‘cause you just have to get up and dance when they play,” says Jones.
