Joseph Fernandes, Sr., 86

Joseph A. Fernandes, Sr., 86, of Wareham died Sept. 5 at Tobey Hospital. He was the son of the late Antone and Mary (Gonsalves) Fernandes.

He was born in Danvers and lived in Wareham most of his life.

Mr. Fernandes worked as a laborer for the Construction & Laborers Union, Local 721 in Brockton. He was also a Wareham Firefighter serving on the department since age 16 and he also maintained the athletic fields for the Wareham School Department.

He enjoyed landscaping, taking care of his lawn and fishing. He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church and had served as an altar boy.

Survivors include his friend, Mary McCoy of Wareham; two sons, Joseph A. Fernandes, Jr. of Dartmouth and Christian Fernandes of Wareham; two daughters, Robyn Fernandes of Los Angeles, California and Stacey Fernandes of Wareham; three brothers, Edmund Pinho, Antone Fernandes and John Pinho all of Falmouth; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. He was the husband of the late Anne M. (Burgo) Fernandes.

Visiting hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11.

His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham. 
Burial will be private.
