Forget about the boys in blue. This October, Wareham Police officers are sporting pink.

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, officers are participating in the #PinkPatchProject alongside other police from departments across the country.

On Tuesday, Police Chief Kevin Walsh appeared before Selectmen to announce the campaign. On his sleeve was one of the patches, which are available at the Wareham Police Department for a $10 donation.

“We hope to get a good response from this,” said Walsh. “It certainly is a worthy cause.”

Proceeds will benefit the Southcoast Breast Health Center, headquartered in Dartmouth. The center provides breast cancer diagnostics, treatment and preventive care throughout the South Coast, including Wareham.

Walsh noted that Officer Karl Baptiste approached him with the idea, which is meant to start a conversation about the importance of detecting breast cancer early.
