12 megawatt solar plant proposal starts review process in Wareham
A Boston-based solar developer is preparing to turn open space near a slew of cranberry bogs into a large solar energy facility.
Plans call for installing 32,724 solar panels in four different arrays on land near the intersection of Route 25 and Charge Pond Road. The panels will generate roughly 12 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power approximately 490 medium-sized homes.
The arrays are slated for land behind Municipal Maintenance headquarters, near the high-voltage electricity transmission lines that run through the area.
On Monday, officials representing the developer, Bluewave, appeared before the Planning Board. Members reviewed lot lines for the project. Bluewave will be back before the board for a site plan review at a later date. A site plan review is a comprehensive look at the project and required before the project can be approved to move forward.
In total, there are eight lots. Bayside Agriculture, Sure Cran Services, Eversource, the Wareham Fire District, David Fletcher and Herbert Ashley own the lots.
During the review, board members found that the plans met provisions of the state’s Subdivision Control Law requirements related to frontage and access. Chair George Barrett described it as a “codification of the lot lines.”
During discussion, board members were told that the arrays would mostly be surrounded by cranberry bogs and undeveloped land.
“None of this is visible from the road?” asked Planning Board member John Cronan.
“Correct,” said Richard Riccio, project manager for Field Engineering.
The project is slated for an area of town zoned as low-density residential. According to Director of Planning & Community Development Ken Buckland, that designation is meant to protect the town’s water supply from overdevelopment.
Bluewave officials will appear before the Conservation Commission on Oct. 18 for a series of public hearings related to the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act. The hearings start at 7:15 p.m. in Room 320 in the Multi-Service Center, 48 Marion Road.
