Gilbert Franklin, Sr., 90

Gilbert E. Franklin, Sr., 90, of Wareham, died Oct. 24 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Alice P. (Dockett) Franklin.

Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he was the son of the late Anna (Browning) and Charles A. Franklin.

Mr. Franklin worked in construction in Michigan before moving to Wareham in 1963. From 1965 to 1986, he was a boiler fireman at Otis Air National Guard Base, now Joint Base Cape Cod in Bourne. After his retirement, Mr. Franklin worked for Clement Pappas and Co. in Carver.

Mr. Franklin was a World War II Army veteran and served from 1943 to 1946 in the European theater.

He enjoyed his home, paint by number, traveling, masonry work and being with his family.

Survivors include his children, Paula Frye of Quincy, Gilbert E. Franklin, Jr. and his wife Pam of Marion, Karen Nixon of Cape Coral, Florida, Gordon Franklin of Marion, Gary Franklin and his wife Rhoda of East Hampton, Connecticut, Kendall Burgess and her husband Roland of Spokane, Washington, Christina Beckham and her husband Roger of S. Beloit, Illinois, Gregg Franklin of Ocala, Florida and Glen Franklin and his wife Robin of Shutesbury; his brother, James Franklin of Baltimore, Maryland; his sister, Doris Lewis of Ann Arbor, Michigan;18 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his siblings, the late Harold Franklin, Douglas Franklin, Charles Franklin, Jr., and Joyce Curtis; his sons’ in-law, the late Richard Frye and Raymond Nixon and his daughter in-law, the late Debra Lopes Franklin.

His funeral service will be held on Monday, Oct. 30 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 462 Main St., Wareham at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be Sunday at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28), Wareham from 4 to 7 p.m.
