Vikings shut out Bulldogs 26-0 in annual powderpuff game

Nov 30, 2017

The Wareham Lady Vikings powderpuff football team has now won two of its three annual matches against Old Rochester Regional High School.

The Lady Vikings completely shut out the ORR Lady Bulldogs on November 29, nearly leaping to victory with an overall score of 26-0.

Wareham players Gabby Lefrancois and Shayla Foote often worked as a tandem team, with Foote catching a majority of Lefrancois' passes. The Lady Vikings offense made sure that Lefrancois, the Vikings' quarterback, always had room to think about a good play. And if she didn't? Well, she just ran the ball herself.

Senior Haley DeMello also caught several of Lefrancois' passes, eventually scoring a touchdown late in the second quarter.

By the start of half-time, the score was already 14-0 in favor of Wareham.

In the second half, the Vikings only widened their leading margin. The Vikings scored another touchdown in the third quarter to bring the score to 20-0, although an attempted two-point conversion was thwarted by the Bulldogs.

In the fourth quarter, Lefrancois managed to intercept the ball. The interception brought the Vikings offense on the field for one more try at a touchdown. The successful attempt left the final score at 26-0.

The annual powderpuff game is a fundraiser for both schools; it began three years ago. The Lady Vikings have now won two of the three games, although they were defeated by Old Rochester in 2016.

South Coast Sports and Consignment, of East Wareham, is sponsoring a scholarship for one student from each powderpuff team. The scholarship winners will be announced later in the week.
