The Wareham High School library media center will get some new furniture and a fresh coat of paint with a donation from The Gateway Tavern of $10,000.

The Gateway Tavern has donated to the library media center for the last seven years, raising $64,750 in total. This year's donation, along with last year's, were both presented to Wareham High School administrators on Tuesday, totaling $19,000.

The Gateway Tavern's donations come from its annual golf tournament with dinner tickets, raffles and auctions. This year, 64 golfers participated in the tournament.

In the past, the money has been used to purchase new computers for the library, new tables and chairs, renovations for a presentation area, equipment and supplies for a portfolio area, new library software and Chromebooks.

This year, the money will be used to update the library's appearance, which hasn't changed much since it was built 27 years ago, said Wareham High School librarian Judith DeBonise.

Joe Sauro, owner of The Gateway Tavern, said his goal is to donate $100,000 in total to the school's library media center. Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino said he believes the library will be up to speed within three years, thanks to the donations.

"Without these donations we wouldn't even have a library and we probably wouldn't have a librarian," Palladino said.

The library gives students an opportunity to research, prepare for college and take online courses, he said.
