The Wareham/Carver Vikings hockey team's record is now 2-3 following a win and a loss over the past two weekends. For game summaries, see below.

Vikings earn 4-2 win over Monarchs

On Dec. 27, the Wareham/Carver Vikings squared off against the Mashpee/Monomoy Monarchs and skated away with a 4-2 victory. The Vikings got on the board first. Jared Robbins passed the puck to Quirino doCanto, who tapped it to Tyler Lovendale, who beat the Monarchs defenseman, then ripped a quick shot by the goalie.

The lead didn’t last long as the Monarchs scored two goals, less than a minute apart. The Vikings got their bearings after that point, stopping the momentum shift. Both teams battled tough through the second period, neither wavering, making the score 2-1, going into the final period. The turning point for the Vikings was when they took advantage of a power play, when Robbins tucked in a deflected shot, with assists going to Bryan Gallagher and doCanto.

As time ticked away in the final period, both teams had scoring opportunities, but it was the Vikings who got one by the goalie, when Jackson Sylvester skated down the right side, drawing over the Monarch’s defensemen, leaving doCanto open in front of the net. Sylvester made the pass, and doCanto finished the play, beating the Monarch’s goalie, with what turned out to be the game winner. Sylvester would add his own goal at the end of the game, taking a shot on an empty net, assisted on the goal by Olivia Sontag. After giving up two early goals, Alex DeMarco, shut the door, not allowing another goal over the final two periods. The win was the Vikings second of the season, matching their win total from last season, and moved them to a 2-2 record.

Vikings lose to Blue Hills, 7-2

The Vikings hockey team battled against Blue Hills for the second time in this early season, on Dec. 30. They came away with a tough loss, 7-2. Blue Hills got on the board first, early in the game. The Vikings jumped on the board, when they scored on a power play, which has been a strong point for this young Vikings team. The goals was scored by Tyler Lovendale, his sixth of the season, scoring goals in all five games this season. Jared Robbins and Quirino doCanto had the assists on the goal. The score remained tied at one, until there was 1 minute left in the period.

While the Vikings were shorthanded, doCanto grabbed a loose puck, skated in on partial break away, and put a quick shot up over the Blue Hills goalie. At the end of the first period, it looked like the Vikings had Blue Hills on the ropes. Blue Hills didn't wait long to attack though, scoring early in the second period, and four more times in the period. The Vikings record is now 2-3. The Vikings start their league schedule in the new year, when they play Somerset Berkley, Wednesday night, 7:30 p.m. at Gallo Ice Arena, in Bourne.
