Wareham residents are digging out after the first winter storm of 2018, facing icy roads and sidewalks, though few serious damages hit the town.

Schools are closed for a second day on Friday, though the storm only left a few inches of snow. The temperatures are still low and the streets are icy.

Several hundred people were without power at some point on Thursday, but as of Friday everyone in Wareham has power, according to Eversource.

“Eversource did a very good job getting people back online as soon as the power went out,” said Town Administrator Derek Sullivan.

Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh said the police department responded to several minor motor vehicle accidents, but most people stayed off the roads so there were no major incidents.

“Our officers work in all kinds of weather all the time,” Walsh said. “We take the hazards as they come.”

Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin said the department responded to about 15 calls related to frozen or broken pipes and downed wires, but there wasn’t a lot of major damage except for the collapsed roof on the Wareham Benny’s.

“Luckily, it was as good an event as it could have been,” Goodwin said of the storm.

He advised everyone to check their smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries in the continuing cold weather and to be careful with electric space heaters, giving them 3 feet of clearance.

The town-wide parking ban is still in effect until further notice.
