1 Selectman, 1 School Committee candidate submit nomination papers

Two people have returned nomination papers to the Town Clerk’s office as of Jan. 18, making their candidacy for seats on the Board of Selectmen and School Committee official.

Both Selectmen incumbent Alan Slavin and School Committee candidate Michael Flaherty returned papers with the required 50 signatures on Jan. 16.

Slavin was first elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2012. Prior to that he had served on the Capital Planning Committee and the Planning Board. Slavin also serves on the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District Commission. The agency seeks to create economic opportunity in southeastern Massachusetts, protect natural resources and develop cultural amenities.

Others who have taken out nomination papers for Selectmen, but have not yet returned them, include: Faith Berry, Marc Bianco and Mary Bruce.

Flaherty previously served one, three-year term on the School Committee, deciding not to seek reelection in 2015. Recently, Flaherty has called on the administration to redouble its efforts to increase student test scores in the wake of Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood’s recent evaluation. Others who have taken out nomination papers for the School Committee, but have not yet returned them, include: incumbent Geoff Swett, Rebekah Pratt and Rebecca Kennen.
