After learning that a school crossing guard was struck by a car last week, Wareham Middle School students took it upon themselves to brighten her road to recovery.

The crossing guard, Lisa Morales, was struck on Jan. 23 by a 76-year-old driver near the intersection of Viking Drive and Marion Road. She was taken for treatment by Wareham EMS for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

On Jan. 26, a few students approached the middle school’s nurse and expressed interest in writing get well soon cards.

“This wasn’t something a teacher told them to do,” said Principal Dr. Peter Steedman. “This happened organically and now a lot of students are on board. They responded right away.”

The cards are handwritten with drawings and plenty of encouragement for the crossing guard, who is currently home and recovering. Steedman said once more cards are in hand they will be delivered later this week.

Fifth grader Nevaeh Fernandes expressed what a lot of students were feeling after they heard the guard was struck.

“I felt bad she got hit and wanted to make a card,” she said. “Hopefully this will make her feel better.”
