Gertrude F. Wilson, 83, of Wareham, died March 24 at the Tobey Hospital in Wareham after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Robert J. Wilson.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late George and Ella (Trainor) Hanlon. A graduate of Mission High School in Boston, she received her diploma in nursing from Catherine Labouré School of Nursing. She began her nursing career at St. Margaret’s Hospital in the “special care” nursery, followed by supervisory work at Massachusetts Hospital/School for Disabled Children in Canton, the Carver Public School system, and retired from St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. After her retirement, she continued to serve the community she loved at the Wareham Council on Aging as fuel assistance and outreach counselor for 13 years.

She loved her family and enjoyed playing the organ and dancing. In her youth, she enjoyed roller skating and played girls softball. She continued her enthusiasm for sports as she watched her sons play sports.

She was a dedicated nurse known for her sense of humor, love of children and animals. She was a hero to her children and was a strong and faithful woman who were blessed to call her “Mom.”

She is survived by her daughter, Jeannie Santoro and her husband Robert of Wareham; her son, Thomas M. Wilson and his wife Mary of Marstons Mills; her grandchildren, Robert Santoro, Heather Brigham, Thomas Wilson, Kristen Santoro, Bryce Wilson, and Catherine Santoro-Mendes, and her great granddaughter, Sierra Brigham. She was predeceased by her sons, the late Robert G. Wilson, and Mark S. Wilson, and her sisters the late Helen Gilpin, Eunice Sullivan, and Florence Leaver.

Her funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28), Wareham on Wednsday, March 28 at 11:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
