Kayak Poker Run contestants luck out despite wet weather

Lady Luck was on the side of the participants of the Onset Bay Association’s fourth annual Kayak Poker Run. After a rainy start, the weather dried up for the run that brought a little bit of offshore gambling to Onset Saturday morning.

Although some pre-registered participants got scared off by the wet weather, organizers said they were pleased with the turnout.

“It’s a wet sport. No matter what, you’re going to get wet,” said Robert Nyman, who has taken part in the run all four years and said he wouldn't have missed the event. “It's for a good cause.”

About 30 players "anted up" with a $25 fee for the fundraising event, which was not a race, just a chance for participants to have fun and enjoy Onset's waterways.

Participants launched with their first card from Shell Point, then paddled across Shell Point Bay to Agawam Beach to pick up their second. From Agawam, they cruised around Shell Point and out to Wickets Island. After collecting their third card at Wickets, they headed across the bay to Kenny's Salt Water Taffy and grabbed their fourth card. The final card was delivered at the registration tent where players had the opportunity to take a hit and replace cards for $2 apiece.

The winning hand was collected by first-year participant Seth Doucette, who took home $150.

“I’m excited,” said Doucette, who traveled from Natick to participate in the run. “We got new kayaks last week and when our friends told us about it we thought, ‘why not?’ I will be back again next year.”

The event offered numerous raffle prizes of kayak gear and gift certificates. The oldest, youngest, and even the most directionally challenged participant were awarded a prize.
