Robert Devoto, 80

Robert (Bob) Devoto, 80, of Carver, husband of the late Norma (Coite) Devoto, passed away peacefully in his home on March 21. Robert was born in Brockton the son of the late Giovanni Luigi “John” Devoto and Augusta (Gussi) Devoto.

Robert graduated from Brockton High School in 1955 and continued his education at Stonehill College. He later joined the U.S. Army Reserves and began a career as a lab technician at Brockton Hospital, which is also where he met Norma. Bob and Norma were married in June of 1962 and spent most of their life residing in Plymouth. Norma preceded him in death in 2014 after 52 years of marriage.

Bob, along with business partners, opened one of the first walk-in laboratories in Hyannis during the late 1970s. In the early 1980s he took over his family business, Govoni Fruit Store, located on the corner of Belmont and Main Street in Brockton. Bob retired in 2012 at the age 74 and Govoni Fruit Store retired as well after 80 years of being in business. Bob enjoyed jogging, walking, yoga and meditating. He was an active member at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Plymouth, made meal deliveries throughout his neighborhood and enjoyed spending time with his dear friend Evelyn Sweeney.

He is survived by his son, Anthony Devoto and wife Christine of Rhode Island, his daughter Angela Almquist, and husband Eric of Wareham; three grandchildren Colleen Dennehy, Joshua Higgins and Andre Devoto; his cousin Donald Coots, his dear friend Evelyn Sweeney and her children Richie, Ann-Marie, Maureen, Kathy, Sheila, Patty and Michael.

A Mass in remembrance, will be offered on Sunday, April 8 at 10 a.m. in St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish 126 South Meadow Road Plymouth, MA 02360. A celebration of his life to follow at 75 Cranberry Road, Carver. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
