Onset Bay Association celebrates successful year at annual meeting

Members and guests of the Onset Bay Association celebrated another successful year and geared up for a summer full of events on April 26.

Approximately 50 supporters of the Onset focused nonprofit gathered at Salerno’s Function Hall. During the group's annual meeting, volunteers were recognized and the group’s President Kat Jones offered an update on its activities and future plans.

“There’s a lot of new things we want to consider as a board so the Onset Bay Association not only grows, but thrives,” said Jones.

Fundraising is one area the association excelled at last year. Total donations soared 102 percent, jumping from $29,155 in 2016 to $58,971 in 2017. The new funds will help pay for the annual fireworks show, which the association is now solely responsible for as of last year. Previously, the fireworks, which cost $40,000 to put on annually, was a joint effort between the association, the Community Events Committee and the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce.

“What we do costs a lot of money,” said Jones, referring to a slew of events, including the Summer of Love Concert Series, Shakespeare in the park, the Blues Festival, Illumination Night and many more. “We need to continue to raise funds to make all of this happen.”

Jones touted the association’s new office, located downstairs from the Salerno’s on Onset Avenue. The association moved in this past January. With the larger space, Jones said there are plans to make the office a bustling place.

“There should be something going on there all the time,” she said.

Jones also provided an update on the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s plan to overhaul the Onset Bathhouse into a hub for a myriad of waterfront activities. Construction is slated to start in 2019. In the meantime, the coalition is moving forward with plans to rebuild the Stone Pier and staircase on Wicket’s Island. Officials plan to turn the island into an outdoor classroom and possibly a place for groups to camp overnight.

Jones said the association is always on the lookout for new volunteers. A membership drive will be launched soon, too. For more information on the Onset Bay Association, to volunteer or join, call 508-295-7072, email onsetvillage@yahoo.com or visit www.onsetbay.org.
