'The Addams Family' coming to Wareham High School on Mother's Day weekend

They’re creepy, kooky, spooky – all together ooky – and coming to Wareham High School on Mother’s Day weekend.

Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Lurch and Puglsey Addams will take the stage in the “The Addams Family” for the Viking Theatre Company’s production of the musical comedy.

This year marks the fourth since Carolyn Gomes-Vieira joined as faculty advisor. In that time, the shows have gotten more elaborate and challenging.

“I don’t want to say it’s out of our reach,” said senior Scott Hatfield, who plays Gomez. “We tend to be ambitious and we tend to pull things together, even if it’s at the last second.”

This year, actors are working to learn several dance numbers, more than any previous show. Helping is choreographer and Wareham High School alum Tyrone Cabral.

“Some of the numbers are difficult, but they’ve been able to handle everything I’ve thrown at them,” said Cabral.

Hatfield said the dancing was a departure for him, but a welcome one.

“I’m not really a musical kind of guy,” said Hatfield. “But this has been a great new experience.”

Hatfield joined the theatre company as freshman and has grown as an actor and person since.

“It’s shaped me to be more outgoing,” he said. “I was shy and kind of timid and now I get complaints from teachers about talking too much.”

His character, the loquacious, amorous Gomez shares that trait.

“He’s an enthusiastic, dramatic father who would do anything for his family,” said Hatfield.

The Wareham Viking Theatre Company will perform “The Addams Family” from May 10-13. The May 10-12 shows will be held at 7 p.m. A noon show will be held on May 13 with a Mother’s Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Tickets cost $8 for seniors and students, $12 for the public. Children under 7 attend for free.

Tickets for brunch cost $5 for seniors and students, $10 for the public.
