Charles Akins, 79

Charles J. Akins, 79, of West Wareham, died May 15 at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Linda L. (Borsari) Akins.

Born in Wareham, he was the son of the late Clyde and Edith (Morse) Akins. A lifelong resident of Wareham, he graduated from Wareham High School, and was foreman for Barnes Tree Service for many years. He retired in 2002.

Mr. Akins enjoyed his family, work, and raising many different types of animals during his lifetime. He also enjoyed following New England and Boston area sports teams.

He is survived by his children, Deborah Maxim and her husband Nathan of West Wareham, Deirdre Halpin, and her husband Robert of W. Wareham; David Akins and his wife Carmel of Quincy, Illinois, and Dennis Akins and his wife Deborah Gayoski of Duxbury; his sisters, Florence Zora of Rochester, and Judith Arne of Marion; eight grandchildren, Leah Thomas, Aaron Akins, Christian Akins, Jacob Akins, Isaiah Akins, Jilia August, Timothy Halpin and Alannah Akins, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, the late Glenna Zora, Gene Pitts, Clyde Akins, Wallace “Luddy” Akins and Lawrence “Huck” Akins.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 19, at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
