Mary Cardoza Mendes, 107

Mary Cardoza Mendes, 107, of Wareham, died May 16 at her home. She was the wife of the late Alfred Mendes.

Born in Wareham, she was the daughter of the late John and Augustina (Monteiro) Cardoza. Mrs. Mendes lived in the Oakdale section of Wareham most of her life. She travelled briefly to Ohio with her husband when he worked for Crucible Steel. After returning to Oakdale, she worked as a cranberry picker for A.D. Makepeace in addition to working as a private housekeeper. Her last employment was at Roland Thatcher Nursing Home where she worked for 35 years retiring at the age of 80.

She enjoyed gardening and being the matriarch of her family.

Survivors include two sons, Fred John Mendes of Wareham, and Joseph Max Mendes of Mashpee; her step-son, Joseph Amado of Bridgeport, Connecticut; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, the late Mary (Mendes) Cardoza; and her great grandson, the late David Cardoza.

Her funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham on Monday, May 21, at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.
