The 5th annual Wareham Oyster Festival made a huge splash on Sunday, when visitors celebrated its largest gathering to date.

Despite gray skies and chilly weather, Main Street was a sea of both vendors and festival goers.

“It’s the biggest we’ve ever been,” said festival organizer Bob Brady. “And we just get better and better every year.”

This year’s festival featured nearly 80 different vendors, selling everything from cotton candy and ice cream to clothing and jewelry.

But oysters were the star of the day.

“I bet we’ll have at least a thousand of them shucked by the end,” Brady said. “Wareham just really does have the best oysters.”

The event kicked off in the morning with an Oyster 5K to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club New Bedford, Wareham unit. According to festival organizer Linda Burke, 135 people took off at the starting line.

“We’re really happy with the turnout,” Burke said. “It’s definitely not a beach day, but at least that means we don’t have to compete.”

Festival attendees also learned more about the mollusks from the Department of Natural Resources. Visitors picked up and handled live oysters.

Other festival highlights included live music from the South Coast Jazz Orchestra and the Unlikely Strummers, a ukulele band.

“It’s a lot of work getting this whole thing together,” Burke said. “But it’s also a lot of fun.”
