Charles F. Gately, Jr., 62, guidance counselor, Wareham Youth Soccer coach

Charles F. Gately Jr., 62, of East Wareham died, Friday, July 8, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. He was known by all whom loved him as Chuck. He was the husband of Patricia A. (Bresnahan) Gately.

He was born in Milton on December 16, 1948, the son of the late Charles F. Gately and Rose Marie (Bauer) Gately. Mr. Gately was a retired Guidance Counselor from the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, where he worked for more than ten years.

Prior to working at New Bedford Voke, Mr. Gately worked for more than 35 years instilling in students the idea of lifelong learning in the guidance field. He organized many college fairs and his students had a very high record of college acceptance.

Mr. Gately’s passion was helping students find their passion and recognize learning continued beyond. There was a need to work strong relationships between students and their parents as they planned for the future.

He worked as the director of guidance at Kennett High School, in North Conway, NH, Boyton Middle School in New Ipswich, NH and Mashpee Middle School. He was the youngest guidance counselor and director of guidance in Massachusetts at Newton Cathedral High School in 1975.

Prior to working in the field of guidance, Mr. Gately served as a Physical Education Teacher at both Timility Middle School and Cathedral High School in Boston. He also worked for Primerica Financial Services where he served as Regional Vice President.

Mr. Gately attended Boston State College where he received a B.S. in Physical Education and two master’s degrees, one in Physical Education and Health Sciences and the other in Counselor Education. He was the captain of the soccer and lacrosse teams at Boston State College.

He was a soccer coach for Wareham Youth Soccer and Mashpee Middle School for many years, as well as a lacrosse coach at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Mr. Gately loved to spend time with his brother in Virginia Beach, collecting shells and going on adventures. He loved to spend time with his children and wife in Weirs Beach, NH.

Mr. Gately enjoyed walking his dog, Tyson, and going to the park with Nina. He was an adopted father and grandfather by many children in the community. He loved very much to spend time with them and take them to the store.

He is a member of Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene in Wareham where he grew spiritually and attended many bible studies at various churches the area.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Gately is survived by his children, Matthew Gately of Wareham and Kathleen Gately, of Mexico City; a brother John B. Gately and his wife Stacey of Virginia Beach, VA, and many loved adopted grandchildren and children who called him Dad and Papa, especially Nina.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, July 12, at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham from 5 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 13, at the Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene, 6 Rogers Ave., E. Wareham at 11 a.m.
