Onset Village Market reopens 2 months after officials shut store down
The Onset Village Market reopened its doors Wednesday night after being closed for more than two months by the Department of Inspectional Services for improperly installed equipment back in July.
According to Health Agent Robert Ethier, the market had installed new coolers without a certified electrician which then overpowered the grid with high voltage. This caused both the store and the Onset Fire Department to lose power. The store was then closed on July 30.
Upon further inspection by Building Commissioner David Riquinha, it was determined that the store also required significant upgrades to its sprinkler system for fire safety.
“We had to go through a lot of different departments in order to reopen which is why it took so long,” said Onset Village Market owner Bobby Patell. “But now everything is safe and up to code.”
Patell has owned the Onset Village Market for almost 10 years and said that the two months in which the store was closed were extremely hard for him.
“I’m here every night by myself and I work every single holiday,” he said. “People were worried about me, some customers even came by my house to make sure I was okay.”
Patell added that he was extremely thankful for the support of his patrons on social media platforms such as Facebook during the closure.
“I miss everyone and I hope to see them back in the store,” he said. “We’ve taken all the steps we need to in order to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future.”
