Wareham football team prepares for annual Thanksgiving game against Bourne

Nov 22, 2011

For many Thanksgiving involves the three "F's": food, family, and football, either watching the NFL on TV or going to see local high schools take on their rivals.

Wareham High School will take on Bourne in the annual Thanksgiving game at Bourne High School on Thanksgiving Day at 10:15 a.m.

Football coach Dan Nault said it's a "very old tradition," going back to the 1980s or so. In the past Wareham has played Bourne earlier in the season in addition to the Thanksgiving game. But now the tradition is that the rival high schools only play each other on Turkey Day.

Neither Nault nor Wareham High School Athletic Director Marc Loranger knew off-hand the statistics of the past Thanksgiving games. (What are your rivalry memories? Share them in the comments!)

Loranger is new to Wareham this year, so he admits to not knowing that much about the rivalry with Bourne.

"I'm kind of learning as I go," Loranger said, adding that he does know Wareham and Bourne are two big teams so it should be a good game.

Wareham's football team is currently 6-3 after falling to Apponequet last Friday. The loss knocked them out of the running for the South Coast Conference title, which the undefeated Bourne took.

Though the Thanksgiving Day game won't help the team qualify for a bowl game, it is still important to the Wareham High School football team.

"It's more a matter of how we play our last game," Nault said.
