Chemo Caps 4 Kids gets helping hand from local business
When Sharon Morais organized the first Chemo Caps 4 Kids crocheting and knitting fundraiser in July, she had two goals: raise $1,000 for nonprofit Kids Kickin' Cancer and donate 1,000 caps to comfort children undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
Morais was inspired to help the charity in memory of Hailey Jean Pease, an 8-year-old Wareham girl who lost her battle with leukemia in July.
Kids Kickin' Cancer helps ease the financial burden of families with children who are battling cancer.
The event, held in September, generated $500 for Kids Kickin' Cancer and 25 chemotherapy caps.
Morais, however, would not stop until she met her goals.
Last week, she posted an update on WarehamVillageSoup.com telling readers that 200 caps had been donated thus far and $605 had been raised. She encouraged people to keep going.
Thomas Anderson and Michael Ferreira, owners of Thomas Michaels Kitchens on Cranberry Highway, saw Morais' post and decided to help out. They donated $400 to the cause.
"We figured it would be nice ... to help a smaller organization," Ferreira said.
But they didn't stop there. They offered to host Morais' next knitting event in their East Wareham showroom, which is complete with a working kitchen.
"We can cut and bang things, but when it comes to knitting, I don't know..." said Anderson. "I'll cook for you guys!"
Morais was nearly speechless.
"They made my day!" she said.
Ferreira continued: "You had a modest goal. ... You hit your goal and we could be a part of it. It's nice."
Morais plans to hold the next Chemo Caps 4 Kids event at Thomas Michaels on February 11, 2012, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
"We'll get some caps knit," Anderson told her. "The resources we have are yours."
