Paula Abdul visits Wines & More
Paula Abdul finished up her judging and coaching duties on Fox's "The X Factor" last week, giving her time for a quick stop in Wareham on Tuesday, Dec. 27.
Abdul made a surprise appearance at Wines & More in Wareham Crossing during an event aimed to help customers choose drinks for their New Year's celebrations.
Employees offered wine, beer, and champagne tastings while music by the Don Q Steel Drum Band filled the store.
Abdul, a singer and choreographer, greeted guests with hugs and posed for photos before touring the store, much to the excitement of surprised shoppers.
"We were sampling wine and the guy was like, "Did you say 'hi' to Paula?'" said Justine Veloza of Fall River.
Fran Veloza was equally surprised.
"I'm shocked," she said. "I'm excited!"
Jennifer Walker, a wine vendor for Wines & More, said she got an "anonymous tip" about the event on Tuesday morning. The Lakeville resident returned for the event with her two daughters and three nieces.
It was the first time the ladies had met a famous person, they said.
"She's really nice," said 11-year-old Leanne Kendal, Walker's niece. "I liked her shoes!" (They were white heels.)
Wines and More franchisee John Caprio was humble about his involvement in the surprise, which was clearly planned meticulously.
"She's a good friend of mine," he said with a smile.
Wines & More opened in late October, filling the 25,000-square-foot vacancy in Wareham Crossing left by Borders.
"It's unbelievable how we've been welcomed" in Wareham, said franchisor John Haronian of Wine and Spirits Retail Consultants.
