Opinion: Wareham is missing out on beach grants

Jul 6, 2021

To the Editor:

On June 13, it was reported in the Boston Sunday Globe that $300,000 in grants from the Conservation Non-Profit Save The Harbor/ Save The Bay and the Massachusetts State Department of Conservation and Recreation were awarded to Massachusetts cities and towns.

The article indicated that organizations plan to host a combined 150 events, offering Bay Staters the chance to attend a concert, catch a movie, rent a kayak, and more on the beach. This program announced the grant winners at a virtual event on June 12th to celebrate an initiative called the Better Beaches Program.

After reading that article, I wrote to our State Representative, who was named to a special committee charged with studying the distribution funds from the Massachusetts Tourism Fund, to find out if Wareham had applied. I was then referred to the Wareham Beach and Tourism Committee. The last minutes of that committee are dated July 2017. Wareham's Beach and Tourism's last two members terms expired this June.
