Dog Park fire hydrant has a new name

Jun 20, 2023

Here’s a wee bit of good news.

After 24 kids submitted their ideas in a townwide contest, the Wareham Dog Park’s fire hydrant mascot has a new name: Wayne.

Ten-year-old Rylee O’Cleary submitted the name, explaining that he chose it “because if dogs are hot, he can ‘wayne’ on them.”

As Dog Park Affiliation of Wareham member Sally Morrison pointed out, the dogs enjoying the park will be “wayning” on him a lot as well.

Members of the Dog Park Affiliation, the Wareham Department of Natural Resources, Wareham Animal Control and the Wareham Fire Department voted on the winning name.

The contest was organized into three age groups. While Rylee won “Best in Show” overall, the winners in each age group received gift cards to the Buttonwood Park Zoo, Gone Country Creamery and Marc Anthony’s Pizzeria.

Seven-year-old James Johnson submitted the name Percy, because “it’s a good watchdog name and he’s keeping watch.”

Eleven-year-old Juliette Noe submitted the name Roger, because “firemen always answer things with ‘Roger’ and he’s a Dalmatian and associated with the fire department.”

Thirteen-year-old Quin Demello suggested the name Pee-ty, “because what do on it.”
