Thomas J. Carney, 83
Thomas J. Carney, age 83, of Brockton, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2024 at St. Joseph Manor. Tom was the husband of Cheryl (Segal) Carney. The son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Collins) Carney, he was born in Boston. He was raised in the Roxbury/Jamaica Plain Section of Boston and was a 1958 graduate of Boston Technical High School in Roxbury. Tom previously lived in Dorchester for several years and had been a resident of Brockton for the past 40 years.
Following his high school graduation he worked for Houghton Mifflin Company in Cambridge until the early 1970’s. He also worked for Ferreira & Sons of Stoughton and retired from Stop & Shop in Readville after 29 ½ years.
He was a proud member of the Teamsters, Past Steward and Past Vice President of the Teamsters Local 829. He enjoyed playing in men’s softball leagues and bowling leagues. Tom was an avid sports fan of all the Boston teams, especially the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He enjoyed dining out with his wife Cheryl, traveling on vacations and going to the movies.
Tom loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He had fond memories of relaxing at the beach, swimming in their pool and grilling for cook outs. Many summer days of fun were spent at Lincoln Park and going to the drive in.
In addition to his loving wife Cheryl, Tom is survived by his children Catherine (Suzy) Wood and her husband Carlston, III of Wareham, Linda Holt and her husband Norman of Marion, Donna Richard and her husband Donald of Wareham, Thomas Carney and his wife Christina of Milton, NH, Kimberly Chapman and her husband Donald of Weymouth and Richard White and his fiancé Rowena Shlosman of Aiken County, South Carolina. He was the grandfather of Jessica Taber, Ashley Taber, Mark Noble, Jr., Leah Ledger, Autumn Wood, Cameron Carney, Abigail Wood, Logan Carney, Donald Chapman, Tara Chapman, Richard White, Jr. and Christina Miller. Tom was the great grandfather of Brandon Noble, Harley Taber, Landyn Shuttleworth, Alana Noble, Emesen Noble, Blake Ledger, Chloe White, Cecilia White, Madelyn White, Nate White, Theo White and Emmalynne Chapman. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, friend Penny Ellis of Wareham and his beloved cat Tabitha “Bubela.”
The family extends a special thank you to Tom’s caretakers at St. Joseph Manor.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, on Monday August 12, from 4-7pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home on Tuesday at 9:30am for a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10:30am.
