Halloween parade paddles off Onset shores

On a clear and crisp fall afternoon, people from the local area got in their Halloween costumes not for trick or treating or a classic Halloween party, but instead for the third annual Onset Bay Center Halloween Paddle Parade.

The event saw close to 80 people arrive at Onset Beach Sunday, Oct. 27 in all kinds of costumes to hop on a paddle board, canoe or kayak for a paddle around Wickets Island guided by Onset Bay Center Staff.

Center Manager for the Onset Bay Center Angie Weldon said this is the biggest crowd they have seen and they hope to get more people next year.

Weldon added the paddle is a part of their monthly series of events where the center puts on a seasonal event for the community.

"We want to give people the opportunity to use our paddle boards and kayaks and stay on the water," said Weldon. "October and fall is a beautiful time down here at the beach and it's not a time where people usually think about the beach so getting people to come down here in these cooler months is always a fun thing."

Kristine Spillane who works in Onset has seen the parade happen but this was her first time participating.

"I watched them do it last year and it's on my bucket list so it's happening today," said Spillane. "It's a beautiful day in lovely Onset so what could be better."

New Bedford resident Alyssa Pacheco came to the event because she was able to celebrate Halloween a little differently by getting on the water with her friends.

"Onset is beautiful and Halloween and kayaking are two of my favorite things," said Pacheco. "I'm excited to see everyone's costumes and I know we're in support of Buzzards Bay Coalition as well which is important to me."
