The Wareham-based club basketball team, "Basketball School," defeated 23 teams to win the "New England Showcase" tournament in Mansfield this past weekend.

"Basketball School" is an age 15-and-under club basketball team with around half of the players from the Wareham area. It is coached by Colbey Santos, also an assistant coach for the Wareham boys varsity basketball team.

The "New England Showcase" was the last tournament of the season for Basketball School, which will start playing again in the fall.

"It was a good to end on a good note, and the kids played really well," he said, adding that eight of the teams that Basketball School defeated were from Canada.

The team gets to waive the entry fee for its next United States Basketball Association tournament as the prize for its win.

College recruiters also came to the tournament looking for the future star players of college basketball. "It was a big deal for the kids," Santos said. "It gives the kids college exposure at a young age."

The New England Showcase was sponsored by the South Carolina-based United States Basketball Association. It was held at the Mass Premier Courts in Mansfield on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.
