Frederick “Fred” Bates, 82

WAREHAM- Frederick “Fred” Bates, 82, of West Wareham, a proud U.S. Navy veteran and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025, after a long illness.

Fred was born in Weymouth on August 6, 1942, son of the late Henry and Amy (Leigh) Bates and grew up in Hingham. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Navy. Fred was the owner of Utility Precast in Rochester, where his work ethic and dedication earned him deep respect in the community. One of Fred’s favorite pastimes was restoring classic tractors—especially his John Deeres. Fred also enjoyed traveling with Sara for many years in their RV.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Sara Bates; his children, Patricia Gill (husband John), and Gregory Bates; and his stepchildren, Wendy Savary (husband Christopher), and the late Melissa Sanders. He was the proud grandfather to Connor, Ryan, Megan, Christopher, Hannah and Cole.

Those who knew Fred will remember him for his strong hands and quiet wisdom. Whether he was tinkering in the barn or meeting his friends for coffee, he made those around him feel valued and welcome. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Fred will be buried with military honors. Services are private.
