Glen Charlie Pond clear from algae bloom
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has deemed Glen Charlie Pond safe from the presence of an algae bloom.
After collecting a second water sample from the pond Tuesday, Aug. 19 the laboratory analysis showed a level of 0 cells/ml, which is below the departments guideline level of 70,000 cells/ml.
The Wareham Board of Health advised the public to stay away from the pond since Tuesday, July 29 after reporting levels of Cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria, the blue-green algae found in the pond, can produce toxins that can make pets and people sick.
According to the CDC, human contact with the algae can cause stomach pain, rashes, headache, coughing, watery eyes, nose irritation and sore throats. Severe issues could include liver damage, seizures and an irregular heartbeat.
