Lady Vikings qualify for state tournament

Feb 4, 2013

Wareham will be watching both Viking basketball teams battle it out in the state tournament, after the Lady Vikings basketball team qualified tournament play following a 60-51 victory over Pope John Paul II at home on Friday, Feb. 1.

“I am pleased with the team's progress thus far, especially since we start only one senior. We still have a long way to go, but we are improving as the season goes along,” said Coach Dave Brogioli.

The young team has just one senior starting, but junior Amber Filkins is the leading female scorer in the South Coast Conference, and junior Breanna Muir has stepped up and proved to be an impressive point guard, Brogioli said.

The other girls have been improving over the course of the season as well, he noted.

“I have been extremely pleased with the development of Erica Trask and Kia Fernandes," said the coach. "I feel they have improved greatly from the beginning of the season.”

The Lady Vikings play the undefeated ORR Bulldogs on Tuesday, and in the run up to the state tournament, the girls will face off against tougher and tougher teams.

Brogioli says he believes the girls have yet to play their best game as a team.

“We need to be more consistent with our effort and attitude, and execution," Brogioli said. "If we can do that, then I think we can compete with anybody on our schedule.”

Elsewhere in Viking basketball, the boys continue to steamroll the competition, beating Case 67-52 on Wednesday Jan. 30, to earn the top spot in the South Coast Conference. The boys also play on Tuesday.
