Batter up! Vikings gearing up for baseball season

Take me out to the ballgame!

The Wareham High School varsity baseball team will kick off the regular season on April 4 against Middleborough, a match-up the team is hungry for.

"We're looking for a little revenge because [Middleborough] knocked us out of the state tournament last year," said Coach Quirino doCanto. "We kind of have a little chip on our shoulder."

The team had a good run last year, but fell to Middleborough in the quarter-finals.

Fortunately, the crowd will be rooting for the home team -- Wareham -- as the game is scheduled for Spillane Field. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.

The Vikings' first appearance on the field will be a scrimmage at home at 10 a.m. this Saturday, March 23, against Oliver Ames.

This is doCanto's first year as varsity baseball coach, but he is familiar with many of the players because of the time he spent coaching Wareham's junior varsity team.

"I know what most of them can do as far as their talent on the field," he noted.

doCanto is replacing David Harrison, who retired after the 2012 season.

The team lost 11 seniors to graduation last year, which has created a bit of a hurdle.

"The past two years they've had a lot of seniors on the team," doCanto explained. "We're basically starting over as a new team."

But the team, which has just four seniors this year, is up to the challenge.

Seniors Nate Strawn and Tyler Ferdinand are both pitchers, and Tyler Russell is returning for his third year as a varsity catcher. Senior Brett Labonte will be playing in the outfield.

As for the rest of the season, time will tell which teams are going to be the toughest to beat.

"It's hard to know at this point," said doCanto. "Dighton-Rehoboth and [Greater New Bedford] Voc-Tech are usually the two strong teams in the South Coast Conference."
