A tense, four-hour standoff on Ladd Avenue ended peacefully at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday.

Wareham Police and State Police responded a home after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance involving a child, according to Wareham Police Chief Richard Stanley.

At the end of the standoff, Michael Mendes, 33, of 4B Ladd Avenue, was taken to Tobey Hospital for evaluation, police at the scene said. Wareham Police charged Mendes with threats to commit a crime, as he threatened to shoot officers, and disturbing the peace, Lt. Kevin Walsh said Tuesday.

The child was released from the home early in the incident, and at no time was it considered a hostage situation, police said.

Police said that an officer first spoke with Mendes via telephone during the incident, and Mendes told police that he had weapons and wanted to be "harmed" by police.

The Massachusetts State Police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) team was then called to the scene.

Mendes was apparently updating his public Facebook account during the incident, posting: "standoff wit tha police lol goodby."

A friend initially thought the post was an April Fool's joke. At 3:24 p.m., Mendes responded: "No joke got tha pic to show."

Friends then encouraged him to leave the home peacefully, and expressed relief later in the evening after hearing he made it out OK.

Police cruisers were parked up and down Sandwich Road, outside of the neighborhood.Sandwich Road was closed from the area of the golf course to Ladd Avenue for some time.

A police officer communicated with Mendes via megaphone.

"Tell us you want to move beyond today," a police officer yelled into a megaphone on Monday evening. "Tomorrow's gonna count. ... My goal is for you to be OK."

After attempts to reason with Mendes verbally were unsuccessful, officials released gas into the home, and Mendes soon exited through the front door.

The "charges were filed in the form of a summons," Walsh said, and explained that, due to medical privacy laws, the hospital could not comment on Mendes' condition or release.

Neighbors were evacuated from nearby homes during the incident, according to emergency reports.

State Police K9 units were also at the scene.
