A 13-year-old girl from Carver was killed and another man was injured in a dirt bike crash at the Wareham motocross track on Monday, Sept. 6, according to a press release from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

The Onset Fire Department responded to the fatal dirt bike accident at the Wareham MX Park near 49 Sean Circle in East Wareham at nearly 3 p.m. When the fire department arrived on the scene, they found and treated two patients in “serious condition,” according to an Onset Fire Department press release.

The District Attorney’s Office said that State Police detectives were notified of the fatal crash at around 4 p.m. and began an investigation.

“Interviews conducted and an analysis of the scene revealed the female victim was traveling southbound on the dirt bike track and appeared to have lost control after landing a jump, swerving into the parallel lane which had northbound riders,” the press release said. “There, the victim collided with a male rider in the northbound lane.”

Both people were transported to Tobey Hospital. At the hospital, Ava Pioppi, 13, of Carver was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries.

The male rider, whose name is not being released, was treated for “non-life threatening injuries” at the hospital.

Moving forward, the investigation is being handled by State Police and the Wareham Police Department, according to the District Attorney’s office.

On Facebook, Wareham MX announced it would be closed “until further notice.”

“We had a tragic accident today and need time [to] pray for the families involved,” the Facebook post said. “We will let everyone [know] when we will open again. Please understand and be patient, the motocross family needs to stick together and stay strong.”

Wareham EMS treated the patients with the help of the Onset Fire Department and the Wareham Police Department.
