30,000 visitors walk the bogs at Cranberry Harvest Celebration

More than 30,000 visitors from throughout the state to as far away as Turkey visited Wareham's Cranberry Harvest Celebration on October 12 and 13.

The celebration is hosted by the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association and the A.D. Makepeace Company, and is held at Makepeace's Tihonet Road property. This year marked the 10th year of the celebration — but organizers learned it was the first for many visitors.

"Most of our buses from the parking lots to the main gate have a volunteer on board to talk about the cranberry industry and let [visitors] know what they'll see," explained Linda Burke, vice president of marketing and communication for the A.D. Makepeace Company. "One volunteer told me she started her talk by asking each busload how many people had been to the Harvest Celebration before, and she had numerous entire busloads who had never been."

Visitors could watch A.D. Makepeace Company workers harvest a cranberry bog, build their own mini cranberry bog in a cup, and tour the bogs on a wagon pulled by a tractor.

Activities for children -- including swan and duck paddle boats and pumpkin painting -- were plentiful.

"We stopped selling tickets for the paddle boat rides and extremely popular 'bungee trampoline' around 3 p.m. [Sunday] because there were so many people in line," Burke noted.

Additionally, the event hosted more than 100 vendors selling food and crafts.

"Several of our regulars told me it was the best Harvest Celebration they've done, by far," Burke said Saturday, which was the slower of the two days for ticket sales. "Among the most popular items were the fresh cider donuts being baked right on Tihonet Pond by the Great Cape Baking Company, and samples of locally grown and produced wine from Westport Rivers Vineyard."
