Wareham voters on Tuesday enthusiastically said “yes” to a new $90 million elementary school, opted to keep State Representative Susan Williams Gifford (R-Wareham) in office and disapproved of a state ballot question on patient limits for nurses.

Election Day brought 61 percent of the town’s registered voters out to the polls on wet, windy Election Day. Two years ago, the presidential election drew 79 percent of Wareham’s 15,481 registered voters to the ballot box. Results are preliminary as the Town Clerk’s Office has two weeks to certify the vote. 

In Wareham, the question of funding a new, consolidated elementary school garnered much support with 54 percent backing the proposal (5,143 votes) and 39 percent voting against the school (3,670 votes).

Voters also cast ballots in a race that featured a rematch from the 2014 election.

Gifford, an eight-term incumbent, again fended off a challenge from Sarah Hewins (D-Carver) for the 2nd District Plymouth County seat. Gifford netted 55 percent of Wareham’s vote (5,229 votes) to Hewins’ 40 percent (3,810 votes).

Overall, Gifford earned 57 percent of the vote from the three towns that make up the 2nd Plymouth District – Wareham, Carver and Middleborough – while Hewins earned 43 percent.

In addition to the school question, local voters weighed in on three state ballot questions.

Question 3, a referendum on a 2016 state law protecting transgender people from discrimination, passed statewide. In Wareham, 56 percent (5,284 votes) favored the law while 39 percent (3,737 votes) voted against.

Question 1 concerned nurse staffing levels and was defeated statewide. The question would have limited the number of patients assigned to individual nurses depending on the type of hospital unit and the health of the patients. In Wareham, 28 percent (2,628 votes) voted “yes” on Question 1 while 69 percent (6,484 votes) said “no.”

Question 2, concerning campaign finance, garnered 5,793 “yes” votes (61 percent) and 3,141 “no” votes (33 percent).
